Do not rinse your mouth for the rest of the day. Starting tomorrow, rinse your mouth gently using mouthwash made from 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
Hold the solution in your mouth for 1 minute, gently swish around and then spit out. Do this every 4 hours, for next 4 days.
Avoid hot food and drink whilst you are still numb. Avoid alcohol, smoking and hard/chewy foods for 24 hours. Choose soft food instead.

Sometimes the socket can start to bleed again after your extraction. If this occurs sit upright.
Apply the pressure using one of the small pads of gauze provided and bite down firmly for 15 minutes. Repeat if necessary. Avoid ducking or interfering with the socket as this can trigger the bleeding.
You may feel pain after an extraction for a few days to weeks after. You may also feel some bruising and swelling. You may need to take some paracetamol/ibuprofen for pain relief if it is safe for you to do so. Do not take aspirin as it will interfere with the blood clot.

After most dental extractions you will be safe to drive and go back to work if your work is not physically strenuous. Your dentist will advise you if this is not the case.
Please call the practice after a dental extraction:
- if the socket is bleeding excessively and you cannot stop it.
- if you have pain that does not seem to be improving, or is significantly worse than before the tooth was removed.
- if there is anything else you are worried about.
The practice number is 01460 923 193
If the practice is closed and you feel you need advice, then please call NHS 111.
